BAMBURGH ANNUAL FLOWER, VEGETABLE and INDUSTRIAL SHOW Saturday September 13th 2008 SCHEDULE (ANYONE INTERESTED IN SPONSORING A CLASS CAN DO SO BY choosing an EXHIBIT NUMBER or class and contacting 01668 214584 SPONSORSHIP WOULD AMOUNT TO £3 for each class. For example J Cowen will sponsor 48 MIXED FLOWERS FOR ALL ROUND EFFECT this will cost her £3) All competition entries can be delivered to Pavilion on Friday September 12th 6-30-7.30pm or Saturday September 13th 10-12 am Each entry costs 20p but if exhibiting more than 5 items there is no entry cost
ADVICE and RULES on HORTICULTURAL ENTRIES Biggest is not always the best Potatoes: put in bucket as soon as dug up. Wash with soapy water and a sponge. Wrap with kitchen roll and newspaper (single) Onions : ideally lift a month before show to ripen. Cover with talc . Bend necks and tie if possible. Cut roots off. 12” onion measured all round. Place on rings back higher. Onion sets: As onions. No rings for flat onion sets Shallots: as above but place on plate with sand or sawdust Peas: do not touch pod with fingers – hold up to light to count peas. Leave a bit of stalk on. Try to get the same number/shape and curve. Wrap in wet kitchen roll. French beans: same length. No beans in pod. leave bit of stalk on, must have tail on, wrap in wet kitchen roll Runner beans: same length, No beans in pod, must have tail, straight as possible, wrap in wet kitchen roll Broad Beans: count beans by feeling pod, same number and shape as possible, leave a bit of stalk on. Carrots: wash with sponge or soft brush, leave about 2-3” of green and tie, stump should have blunt end and tail, wrap in wet tea towel Parsnips: best left to last, same as carrots Beetroot: not too big, wash with sponge or soft brush, leave 2-3” stalk and tie, should have tail, wet tea towel or kitchen roll Marrow: cut approx Wednesday before show, wash, put in sunny spot upside down Courgette: cut day before show, should have flower attached, colour and size(small) important Tomatoes: same size and ripeness, leave small amount of stalk attached Leeks: make sure leek fits in with Schedule, button should be fast, wash white, roots and leaves very carefully, leave foliage intact FLOWERS Better to have same colour where possible in threes Pansy: better on board, oasis on back of board, no tinfoil Asters: better on board as above Use oasis wherever possible even for a single rose Bowl wider than tall Vase taller than wide Setting up flowers very important COOKERY & HANDICRAFTS
(81-84 framed or unframed 85-92 unframed ADVICE on industrial entries FRUIT TART should not have pastry leaves as decoration A BISCUIT is rolled and cut A COOKIE is made from a soft mixture which is rolled in the hands or sliced from the roll JAMS, JELLIES, MARMALADES should have either 1 A twist top (only) 2 A pliable press on cover (only) with a a traditional jam jar 3 A wax disc(covered with a cellophane top) when cooled. No wax disc is needed under a twist top or plastic top Lemon curd should have a wax circle and cellophane top.
