Special Exhibition in the Crypt
Bamburgh Heritage Trust will commemorate the centenary of World War I and the Battle of the Passchendaele with a special exhibition in the crypt of St. Aidan’s Church, Bamburgh.

The crypt will be open to the public from 12.00 noon – 3.00pm on Wednesday 20th, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September. The significance of these dates is that villager William Hall was killed at the Battle of Passchedaele on 20th September 1917. A quarter peal of bells will be rung in William’s honour on Wednesday at 12 noon.

The HLF ‘First World War: then and now’ fund enabled community volunteers to look at the impact of WWI on the village of Bamburgh. They researched the young men who went to war, the war effort at home and on farms and the stories of the soldiers who returned to village life and what they did after the Great War. The wealth of information gathered has informed the exhibition as well as the creation of a fictional diary for Mr. Little, Bamburgh’s school teacher. This beautifully illustrated book will be available at the exhibition.

Visitors to the crypt can explore the village through the 2nd edition OS map together with images of WWI soldiers and veterans and Bamburgh in the early 20th century. The exhibition in crypt offers the opportunity to also see the Anglo-Saxon Ossuary. Member of Bamburgh Heritage Trust will be on hand to provide more information.
